Uncommonly referred to as the champagne of apples, Cripps Red was discovered in Western Australia by John Cripps by crossing the Australian apple Lady Williams with a Golden Delicious. It combines the sweetness of Golden Delicious and long conservation features of its Australian sibling. Its yellow-white pulp is firm, crisp with a tangy and sweet flavor.
Apples are a great snacking fruit as they are low in calories, high in water content and offer a fair amount of vitamins A, B and C. They also contain a dietary fiber known as pectin, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and help prevent heart attacks. They also contain trace amounts of boron, which has been touted for its ability to help build strong bones.
