Apricot, also called ''Armenian apple'' has disputed origins between Armenia, China, India and sometimes even Japan. Introduced in Greece by Alexander the Great, it soon spread into Western Europe where it has been grown since then. Slightly over 50% of apricots are produced in the Mediterranean area. A leading product of the Catalan plain, the Royal Roussillon apricot has AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlee – in French) status, in recognition of its great taste. Round in shape, with a smooth, downy skin, the Royal Roussillon apricot is orange-red with red dots. It is sweet and juicy thanks to the great amount of sunshine it gets.
Apricots contain various phytochemicals, such as provitamin A beta-carotene and various polyphenols. Rich in fibers, apricots are beneficial for digestive transit and contribute to colon cancer and heart disease prevention.
