Introduced from Asia during the 15th and 16th centuries, the Canary Island (Spain) banana is considered as the only banana growing in ''continental'' Europe. The Canary Island banana displays a yellow-gold colored skin typically characterized by small black stripes. Its pulp is yellow-orange and often consumed as it is. People from Canary Islands also like to eat it fried with Cuban style rice. Mainly produced on the island of Tenerife, it is also to be found on the island of La Palma, especially in the Aridane Valley region.
Banana contain fibers, carbohydrates, soluble sugars and sucrose. They are a very good source of vitamin B6 and C as well as minerals such as magnesium, selenium, potassium (efficient against cramps), biotin and copper. Canary banana differentiate by a higher level of potassium compared with other bananas.It is an important food in growth periods and after work out.
