Native from Columbia and Southern Central America, sweet potatoes were brought to Asia after Colombus' discoveries. They were introduced to Okinawa, Japan, in the early 1600s by the Portuguese and became a staple as they helped to prevent famine when rice harvests were poor. Characterised by their deep purple flesh, sweet potatoes violet have a rich, almost winey flavor with a creamy texture. They are denser and drier than regular sweet potatoes, which is why moist cooking methods and longer times are recommended.
Sweet potato is rich in vitamin B6 and C that helps your body release sugar from stored carbohydrates for energy. It is also a source potassium which is good for blood pressure control and nerve transmission. They also contain proteins and fibers!
